Lily Challenge – Week III

I’ve made it through another week of the Lily challenge! I guess since I’ve done it for 21 days straight, it is officially a habit. At least that’s what I remember being taught a long time ago. The best part of this week was celebrating Lily’s first birthday. Dorothy and I really can’t believe she’s a year old already. We kept her birthday celebration simple – we only invited family. Even so, all the attention was rather overwhelming for Lily. We put her down for about three seconds by her presents and she immediately starting screaming. Not good. We decided to hold her the rest of the time.

Week three also saw some of the worst flooding our area has had in a while. I spent the first two days plus of the week getting water out of our basements (ours and our tenants) and then getting both sets of hot water heaters and heating systems back online. The funnest part (said with much sarcasm) was that the two sump pumps that I started the week with both died. And anyone who was in a similar situation knows that it was close to impossible to find a sump pump in just about any store in Eastern Mass by 10 a.m. on Monday. Not kidding.

In spite of our circumstances and my utter exhaustion, I was determined not to miss a day of the Lily Challenge. And I’m happy to say I didn’t.

Happy Birthday to the cutest kid in town! (I openly admit I am completely biased.)

Here’s a week’s worth of pictures and their stories…enjoy!

Day 15 – Laughter when we needed it most

As I said before, Monday and Tuesday were brutal. In spite of our waterloggedness, Lily can always put a smile on our faces. It’s impossible not to smile when you hear her laugh.

Day 16 – Little Drummer Girl

We’re already convinced that Lily is going to follow in the footsteps of Dorothy’s cousin Ethan and become a drummer. Dorothy gave her the pot. I guess she figured she should start practicing.

Day 17 – Baby Urban Explorer

Urban exploration is a new hobby here at the Turner house. I’ll leave it at that. We took Lily on her first (and at this age – probably her only) urban exploration trip to the abandoned Lincoln Park, which used to be a very lively amusement park in Dartmouth, MA. All that remains now are the remnants of "The Rocket" rollercoaster (see picture) and a few small buildings. Read about its history here.

Day 18 – Only for Daddy

So every so often while I’m feeding Lily, I’ll make a similar face to the one she’s making in this photograph. She responds in kind. But only to me. I then usually "snort" her on the nose and she laughs. Just one of those father/daughter things. Snorting.

Day 19 – Sticks

Lily’s official birthday, but we had the party on the weekend. I wanted to try and get myself into at least one of the 31 photos in this project. Since it was SO beautiful on Friday, I took Lily outside to do some "suburban exploration" in our yard. She found sticks. It was very exciting for both of us. We may have discovered a new species of stick. Just in case, we named it "stickalilious." Does that sound Latinish?

Day 20 – Birthday Cake

Taken at Lily’s birthday party. Lily wasn’t sure what to do with the candles, so Dorothy helped her blow them out. She didn’t even want to eat her cake. No worries though – George and I ate her share.

Day 21 – NOT TIRED!!!

So Dorothy doesn’t do well after having caffeine anytime after 2 p.m. We used to have Bible study on Friday nights and if someone forgot to bring caffeine-free Pepsi and all she drank was the caffeinate version, all I would hear on the car ride home was "NOT TIRED!!!" Thrilling. I get it. Well, caffeine or not (in Lily’s case not), Lily tends to not like napping. This time, she was letting me and Nana know by screaming at the top of her lungs. Thus, all the LEDs are glowing brightly on the monitor.
