They met in high school. They didn’t date though until they reconnected years later at a social event. She’s a high school guidance counselor. He’s a police officer. It’s pretty obvious spending just a few minutes with Kelly and Ray that they’re madly in love with each other. He can’t take his eyes off her. She giggles, glances at him and her face lights up. Totally smitten.
Kelly is the type of bride I love to work with. She’s organized, knows what she wants and gets it done. The wedding dress she selected was only the sixth one she tried on. At one point in their engagement session, I said, "So, have you guys talked about the future much?" Kelly’s immediate response was, "We want to have three kids." Ray said, "There you go with the kids again!" Kelly giggled.
I met up with Kelly and Ray for their engagement session in Harwich. Ray’s family has a cottage on a lake there. The weather report had been iffy, but as I got closer to Harwich, I became giddy with excitement. It was like I was driving into a winter wonderland. It couldn’t have been more beautiful.
We took the first few shots in the woods near the cottage and the traveled down the road to a general store. After that, we headed to THE spot of the day, the grist mill in Brewster. We did a little detour along the way so I could show them the Cape Cod Barn, a place where Dorothy and I had previously stayed. They fell in love with it right away.
The grist mill itself was perfect. There was no one else there and the freshly fallen snow provided an absolutely beautiful back drop to this historic site. I asked Kelly and Ray to stroll around the pond while I shot from a distance. We also had some fun with the props they brought – Ray’s police hat and an older police jacket.
We then took a short drive to Paine’s Creek Beach. Due to the fact that the temps were in the low 30s and the wind was gusting between 40-50 mph, we stayed at the beach for literally three minutes.
We ended the day with lunch at the Hot Stove Saloon in Harwich, MA. Kelly and Ray love this place. Ray used to be a catcher in high school and the entire Saloon is a tribute to baseball catchers throughout history. And the food is yum! I had a fantastic cup of clam chowder (or should I say "chowdah") and a grilled Rueben sandwich. Definitely a great way to warm up on a cold day.
Okay, so we didn’t quite end the day at the Saloon. I may have taken a few more pictures on the way back to the cottage and then a couple more at the cottage itself. What can I say, if I have a camera in my hand…I’m gonna keep shooting!
This was one of those sessions I won’t soon forget. Everything was just perfect. The weather. The setting. The people. Congrats to Kelly and Ray! I’m looking forward to celebrating the big day with you this July!!
