Wedding Bliss and Abandonment

Well, this blog is probably not about exactlywhat you would expect from the title. It is actually about a post-wedding shoot in an abandoned factory. Juxtaposition is the first word that comes to mind when I think of a bride in her wedding dress in an abandoned factory. The way Jen and Brandon ended up there is a story within itself.

Several months ago, after her own wedding in May, Jen contacted me and said that she wanted to "trash" her dress. I was thrilled. I never imagined that we wouldn’t shoot the session until almost six months later. The first and second appointments were both rescheduled because of the remnants of hurricanes coming through the area. The third appointment was rescheduled because Jen slipped and cut her lip open the day before. In her words, "I don’t want to look like the beat-up trashed bride." I agreed.

Our original idea was to "trash" the dress at a fair. Since our last appointment was for the end of Toppsfield Fair and there aren’t any fairs in November and December to speak of, we had to find something different. When I recently received permission to photograph in an abandoned factory, I sent Jen an email. I’ll never forget her immediate response – "Is it safe?" I laughed to myself as I thought about the collapsing roof, the broken glass and jagged metal strewn about the building as well as the caved-in floors. "Safe" wasn’t the first word that came to mind, but it was definitely manageable especially with a little bit of common sense.

We figured out a day and time and we both crossed our fingers that a hurricane or snowstorm wouldn’t ruin our plans again.

The day of the shoot, it was chilly and wet. It was drizzling outside, but I knew we would stay mostly covered in the building. Jen and Brandon braved the elements and we pulled it off. My friend and former client, Nikkie Marie, came along to check the place out and take some photos too.

Jen and Brandon did an awesome job of being patient with me as I figured out the poses and lighting in the many different spots we shot. They even walked out of the building unscathed! Yeah!! Thanks for giving me the chance to have another unique set of images in my collection. I hope you like them as much as I do!

The few windows that are still in tact.

Notice the water rushing down from the roof on the right side of the frame.

Yes, the wall really is THAT green.
