About Black Thumb Studio
How did you get that name?!
We use Nikon professional DSLRs when we shoot. We found that when we’re shooting all day, the black rubber on our camera literally wears right off the camera onto our thumb. Seriously! We’d be happy to show you!
With that in mind, we felt the name “Black Thumb Studio” was a true representation of who we are as photographers – passionate, hard working, a little outside the box and self-sacrificing. We’ll do anything we need to get THE shot.
Where is your studio?
Everywhere! Although we don’t have a permanent physical indoor location where we shoot, we see the world around us as our studio. We prefer a variety of environments for our photography and because our focus is on wedding photography, we have not found a studio of our own to be a priority. We have many different locations we photograph regularly and have exclusive access to some really cool properties as well.

Jeff
Photographer Jeff Turner was raised in Somerville, MA. Born the “son of a preacher man,” he quickly learned the values of diversity, humanity and unconditional love. He has always had a passion for adventure and travel and can remember sitting in church listening to the stories of visiting missionaries. Jeff’s love of the outdoors grew out of the many weeks he would spend in New Hampshire with his family.
Jeff earned a B.A. from Eastern Nazarene College in Quincy, MA. It was at ENC that his love of photography took root. A school trip to Venezuela with one of his early photography mentors, Rob Larocco, made a lasting impression. Jeff’s elective photography class with the provocative Carl Winderl earned Jeff the only A+ of his school career.
Jeff’s love of nature is evident in his compelling portraits and his evocative landscapes of New England. Jeff’s self-proclaimed “in the moment” wedding photography appears both intimate and spontaneous. An inveterate traveler, Jeff’s African animal photos were the inspiration for his pet photography business. In addition, Jeff enjoys shooting social events as well as family and child portraits. His work has been featured prominently on boston.com a number of times.
Jeff regularly wakes before dawn to venture out and capture the world as it welcomes another day. On the rare occasion that he sets the camera aside, he heads for the White Mountains to play. Whether skiing, camping or hiking, he’s still a nature boy at heart.
George
George Buhl is a native of Kingston, MA. He enjoys the challenge of capturing the majesty of nature and raw emotions with his camera. Known as the guy who always has his camera with him, George is always looking for a new subject to photograph. He spends hours taking pictures of friends, family, and pets. As a young child, he built a bird blind in his yard and waited for hours for birds to come close enough to photograph with his father’s Pentax camera.
George earned an Associate’s Degree from Cape Cod Community College, where he honed his computer and networking skills. He’s the family’s “technical support” contact. Through this program, George has mastered his digital photo-editing skills and is a valuable part of the post-production process of each wedding.
When George’s sister married Jeff, George got the brother he had always wanted. He and Jeff will frequently be found camping and hiking in the White Mountains - with their cameras in their packs of course! Their photography business partnership has added a new level to their friendship.
What Jeff has to say about George: “George has the ability to walk up to strangers with his camera and get them to smile like they’ve known him for years. It’s uncanny. He also has an incredible eye and doesn’t hesitate to do whatever it takes to get a great shot. I’m fortunate to work with someone who gets me and knows his way around a camera so well.”

Alana
Alana has always been captivated by viewing life in a creative manner. Integrating the creativity into her daily life lead her to expand her photography capturing a range of emotions from the lives of her family and friends.
Camera in hand, surrounded by woods, completely enthralled by the elegance of nature, she discovered her true spark of passion for photography. Growing up in Scituate, MA, Mother Nature provided landscapes that took her breath away and being able to capture those moments –the ones where nothing else matters because the grandeur of the scenery in front of you is so engaging- to share with others gave her a rush like no other.
Alana’s passion for photography and capturing life through the lens, led her to earn a degree in Photography at the New England Institute of Art. Nearing the end of her classes she took part in an internship with Jeff Turner.
Working alongside Jeff Turner and George Buhl, she has further developed her skills in photography and also has given her a chance to use her creative eye to design wedding albums.
